I am originally from London, UK, where during the day I taught Mathematics
(BEd) in secondary schools and at night performed as a guitarist
in several bands. It
seemed that I wasn't coping with the demands and stresses of my
lifestyle and found that gradually over time, I had started to develop
nagging pains around my shoulder and neck. Eventually, this developed
into a chronic form of RSI and I was forced to stop my music endeavours
whilst seeking treatment.
I was
very frustrated about not being able to play music and began investigating
several therapies and modalities to help with my rehabilitation.
Whilst on this search, I came across The Alexander Technique. It
immediately resonated with me, with its emphasis on developing self-care
and awareness, as well as its success in helping RSI sufferers and
performing musicians.
After
several lessons I experienced a substantial reduction in my pain,
as well as a new sense of ease in my body. On top of this, I noticed
a general clarity in my thoughts as well as a mental calmness developing
in my daily activities. I was able to return to my passion of music
and found a significant improvement in my music skills, which I
attribute to my lessons with The Alexander Technique.
After
studying music performance and voice at college, I trained to be
an Alexander Technique teacher at the School for FM Alexander Studies
with David Moore. I am a member of the Australian Society for the
Alexander Technique (AUSTAT).
