"I find the Alexander Technique very helpful in my work.
Things happen without you trying. They get you to be light and relaxed.
You must get an Alexander teacher to show it to you." John
Cleese
The
Alexander Technique is an educational rather than a therapeutic
method and hence the best way to learn is through one-to-one lessons
with a qualified teacher. This setting also provides the best opportunity
for your individual needs to be addressed.
Like
any skill, it takes practice to apply this work and a series of
lessons (45mins- 1 hour) is recommended with at least 6 lessons
to feel the effects of the work in your daily life.
The number of lessons required varies individually, depending on
your interests and physical condition.
During
the lesson, an Alexander Technique teacher observes your posture
and movement patterns and using their hands (with verbal instructions)
guides you to experience and move your body with greater ease and
balance. With the aid of a mirror, you are taught to perform simple
actions such as sitting, standing and walking with improved coordination
and without pain. This awareness enables you to change long-standing
habits and function more efficiently. You may also wish to look
at more specialised activities such as singing, using a computer
keyboard or even sleeping more comfortably!
The
Alexander technique is not a quick fix but once you have understood
and experienced the principles, you will find you can apply the
technique anywhere and at any time.
People
come to their Alexander lesson wearing loose, comfortable clothing.
Female pupils often feel more comfortable wearing slacks or jeans
rather than skirt.
The
Alexander Technique may also be taught in groups such as in businesses
and schools. John Beddoe is experienced and available for workshops
which provide real and valuable learning experiences for school
pupils, teachers and office workers.
